Lakers Major Atoms Come Up Short Against 99’ers
The Huron Perth Lakers AAA Major Atoms hosted the Brantford 99’ers on January 23rd in Stratford. After playing 5 very good games on the weekend at the Preston International tournament the Lakers did not have their usual spark early in the game.

Goalie Cole Willemsen was called upon early to stop a couple of point blank shots within the first minute. The 99’ers continued to pressure the Lakers and scored back to back goals to take an early 2-0 lead. Later in the 1st period defenseman Connor Shaw made an excellent pass to a speeding Keigan Goetz who let go a shot that handcuffed the Brantford goalie and found the back of the net.

The second period was played evenly with both teams displaying good skill. One minute into the period Ryan Stulp-Jacobson directed a shot on net and Nathan Templeman put the rebound into the net to tie the score 2-2. Four minutes later Brantford scored to take a one goal lead. Within one minute the Lakers were back forcing the play and Templeman made a nifty pass to Gregory Swan in the slot who buried the puck to tie the score at 3-3. Late in the 2nd period the 99’ers went ahead 4-3. With six minutes left Brantford all but iced the game going ahead 5-3. The Lakers pulled goalie Willemsen with over 2 minutes remaining for the extra attacker but could not put much pressure on Brantford and the final score remained 5-3 for Brantford.

Next up for the Lakers is a game in Waterloo on January 27th as they tune up for the upcoming Alliance play downs.

The Lakers want to again thank their many sweater sponsors and McCann Construction (Matt & Erin McCann), our team sponsor, for their continued support.
