Lakers Major Atoms AAA Drop 1st Game to Brantford 99’ers
The Huron Perth Lakers AAA Major Atoms traveled to Brantford on Feb. 19th to open their quarter final Alliance League Play Downs. After a long layoff without a game the Lakers started the game slowly. With just over a minute played a defensive give away led to Brantford opening the scoring. At the mid way point of the 1st period Quinton Haddock and Connor Shaw teamed up to chip the puck up to the Brantford blue line. Derek Elliott turned on the jets as he sped past the 99’ers defenders and lifted a perfect shot off the cross bar into the net to tie the score 1-1. Late in the period goalie Kent Taylor made a fantastic low stick save to keep the score tied.

The 2nd period was almost a carbon copy of the first period. Five minutes into the period Brantford scored to take the lead. With time running out and only 11 seconds on the clock defenseman Garrett James made a super play to get the puck to defense partner Alex Peters. Peters steadied the puck and fired a good shot which caught the goalie off guard to tie the score 2-2. The Lakers were being out shot 21 to 5 at the end of the second period. Taylor’s outstanding net minding was giving the Lakers a chance to win the game. At the 8 minute marker of the 3rd period Taylor made one more huge glove save from point blank range. This should have sparked the Lakers but the 99’ers proved too much for them this night. The 99’ers scored 5 unanswered goals to make the final score 7-2. The Laker coaching staff reminded the team that this is a six point series and there is a lot of hockey left to play. The Lakers will fit a practice in before hosting the Brantford 99’ers in Stratford at the new complex on Feb. 22nd with the puck scheduled to be dropped at 7:30 pm.
