Laker Minor Bantams have Strong Tourny despite Further Adversity
The HPL Minor Bantams traveled to London this weekend for the annual Green and Gold Tournament that hosted many of North America's top teams. The Lakers faced a tough draw having to play Ajax-Pickering, Grey-Bruce, Pittsburgh and last year's All Ontario Champions: York-Simcoe Express.

The Lakers first game was against Ajax-Pickering, a highly ranked team that the Lakers played very well. Despite numerous chances the Lakers ended with a 1-1 draw but managed a strong game. Scott Coughlin sustained an injury after a terrific back check to save a break away on a good hit. Coughlin is expected to return soon.

The Lakers' next game was against the Grey-Bruce Highlanders, a team that is doing well this year by playing a strong physical game. The Lakers dominated play in this match up despite it being a very physical contest and took away a 3-0 win over a team that had tied the London Knights earlier in the day. Coach McKeown stated that the boys followed the game plan to a "t" and that it was their best "character" game of the year. He was tremendously proud of his team. Jerry Ennett and Iain Donnelly were much needed additions to a squad that is reeling from injuries.

The Lakers short bench took its toll the next day when they faced last year's Alliance Champion York-Simcoe Express, Donnelly was back with his own squad and the Lakers were down to 12 skaters. Despite taking a 5-2 loss the Lakers realized they can play with any team, and at full strength would really have given the Express a run for their money.

The Lakers final game in pool play was against a weaker team in the Pittsburgh Jr Penguins. The Lakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead with dominate play; however, fatigue took over and the Penguins were able to tie it up late in the game. Had the Lakers been able to keep their two goal margin they would have advanced to Semi-Final play.

Ben Nelson was able to play his first game of the season after sustaining a late summer injury. The Lakers are ecstatic to have him return to play.

The number one take away from the tournament for the athletes was their ability to play and win against any team.

Following a game plan and bringing loads of energy is all this team needs for success. Their ability to overcome adversity is a trait that will take them far this season.
