Minor Atoms Finish in 1st Place in Round Robin in the Central Ontario Wolves Cup Tournament
Minor Atoms Win 3 Straight.

On Friday morning, the Minor Atoms headed to the rink for their first game of the tournament with a nice temperature of minus twenty and lots of snow. Brantford 99er's were our first opponents with a 2-0 win for the Lakers. Justin Beuermann took a nice low shot in the bottom left corner assisted by Will Thibeault and Eric Charlebois for a one nothing lead in the first period. Tanner Hertel scored the safety on a nice rush and deked the goalie after a head man pass from Quinton Maddock with 3 minutes to go in the third period. MVP went to Will Thibeault and Brock Baier our (AP) goalie for the shut out.

On a Friday snowy afternoon, the Minor Atoms played their second game against the Clarington Toros and skated away with a 2-1 win for the Lakers. Will Thibeault scored the first goal unassisted with his good efforts. The game was tied 1-1 with 3 minutes to go and then Scott Chisholm scored the winner with assists to Will Thibeault and Cody Treble on a tight battle in front of the net. Game MVP went to Scott Chisholm. The Lakers outshot the Toros 25-12. Chad Treble, Ben Derrough, Brennan Stapleton, Bradley Kraemer, Evan Moorehead, and Quinton Maddock played very well on defence. Mitchell Newson and Jacob Rooke played an excellent game back checking and forechecking. Brock Baier got his 2nd win in net for the tournament.

On Saturday morning, at minus 28 with snow still coming down the Minor Atoms played the Oshawa Minor Generals with a 6-3 win. Will Thibeault came to play with 4 goals with Justin Beuermann picking up 2 assists and Scott Chisholm and Quinton Maddock with 1 assist each. Noah Kuno scored 2 goals with Cody Treble picking up an assist and Eric Charlebois with 1 assist. The Lakers outshot the Generals 21-17. Baily Paquette got the game MVP with his 1st game of the tournament. The 3 games gave the Lakers 41.5 points which doubled the other 5 teams ratings in the round robin point series. This gave the Lakers a sure in for the semi-finals the next day.

On Saturday afternoon the Minor Atoms played the host Central Ontario Wolves who had lost their 3 games earning only 4 points. Unfortunately, the Lakers lost 5-2. This is what happens when you play the underdogs knowing you are in no matter what; a good learning experience for these young boys. Tanner Hertel scored the 1st goal assisted by Ben Derrough. Mitchell Newson scored the 2nd goal assisted by Eric Charlebois and Ben Derrough. We outshot the Wolves 20-13 but could not put the puck in our opponent's net. Game MVP went to Tanner Hertel.

On Sunday morning, the Minor Atoms played Kingston in the semi-finals. The Lakers had played this strong team before earlier in the year losing 4-1. Justin Beuermann tied the game up assisted by Bradley Kraemer and Scott Chisholm in the 1st period. Kingston scored 3 more goals in the second period to establish a 4-1 lead. Tanner Hertel scored assisted by Noah Kuno to lift the Lakers spirits to get back into the 4-2 game. In the 3rd period, Quinton Maddock scored unassisted with a nice dazzle deke top shelf shot, now the Lakers are pumped, it was 4-3 with 14:41 to go. Kingston changed their goalie and the Lakers put the pressure on, no goals were scored so the Lakers pulled Baily Paquette with 1:37 to play in the 3rd. The puck did not come out of Kingston's end with lots of chances to tie the game up but the Lakers lost the game 4-3. Kingston went on and won the Wolves Cup Tournament. MVP of the game was Noah Kuno.

Great job, boys. I have pushed you really hard through the year and look at us now. We are stronger faster and more skilled than when we started out, we are now winning and competing against the top teams and that's a great accomplishment. Keep an eye on us down the road!
