HPL Minor Pee Wees take 1st Place Cambridge to 5 Games
As the HPL Minor Pee Wees set their team goals (stay positive, become a better team & don’t be out worked) at the beginning of the season they knew they had to develop as a team to have a successful season. The players were devoted in accomplishing these goals in the regular season and also knew it would be a key to a successful playoffs.

As the HPL Minor Pee Wees finished regular season in 4th place in the East division this would put them against 1st place the Cambridge Hawks in the opening round of playdowns. The Lakers had some good games throughout the regular season with Cambridge with the Lakers winning 1 of 4. This would also be the first time the two “97” teams have met in the post season in the AAA division.

Game #1 in Cambridge saw both teams come out skating hard with some great scoring chances at both ends. With 1 second left in the 1st period the Cambridge Hawks scored on great 2 on 1 passing play. The remainder of the game was back and forth until 2 minutes remaining in the 3rd when the Lakers lost 2 face-offs that cost them 2 goals against within 11 seconds, giving the Hawks the 3 – 0 win.

For Game #2 in Goderich MRC the Lakers knew they had to get more traffic and pucks to the net and it worked as the Lakers scored midway through the 1st period as they controlled most of the play. The Lakers scored again midway through the 2nd period on a great 3 way passing play before they ran into penalty problems. With 2 Lakers in the penalty box for 2 minutes each this gave the Hawks a full 5 on 3 for 2 minutes, but the Lakers stepped up with some great penalty killing and kept the Hawks off the scoreboard. Once the penalties were killed off the Lakers scored 2 quick goals within a minute and than added a penalty shot goal a minute later, to take a 5 – 0 lead going into the 3rd period. In the 3rd period the two teams traded goals for a 6 – 1 final for the Lakers.

Game #3 in Cambridge the Lakers came out flying controlling the 1st period and scored 2 goals from old fashioned hard work. The Hawks kept working hard and were able to score 1 goal in the 2nd period to cut the Lakers' lead in half. This was game that had both teams collecting numerous penalties. With the clock running down late in the game and with the Lakers just killing off a penalty, the Hawks scored before the Lakers player could get into the play, thus sending the game into overtime. It was an exciting 5 minutes of overtime with both teams getting one good scoring chance each, but both goalies stood their ground, ending the game in a 2 – 2 tie.

Game #4 in Wingham saw the start time for the game delayed as one of the ref’s had problems getting to the arena due to the stormy weather. Once the game started it took both teams a few shifts to get up to game speed and midway through the 1st period the Lakers jumped out to a 1 – 0 lead. Going into the 2nd period, the Lakers were on the power play when a faceoff in the neutral zone eluded the Lakers goalie tying the game and giving the Hawks the break they were looking for. Later in the 2nd the Hawks scored 2 more within a minute and added one more in the third giving the Cambridge Hawks the 4 – 1 win.

The Lakers needed to win Game #5 in Cambridge to force a game 6 in Goderich Tuesday night in the 6 point series. The Lakers controlled most of the 1st period and with a great rush midway through the 1st the Lakers went ahead 1 – 0. Going into the 2nd period the Lakers kept the pressure on totally out playing the Hawks, but with one bounce going Cambridge’s way the game was tied 1 – 1. Once again the Lakers came out determined to win the game, but Cambridge received a break in their own end and sent two Hawk players away on a 2 on 1 and scored off a great passing play. The Lakers didn’t give up and kept pressuring Cambridge right to the end of the game with the final shots for the Lakers 34 and Cambridge 15 With the final score 2- 1 for Cambridge and gave them the series 7 points to 3.

The Lakers will know meet Waterloo and Brantford in a home and home round robin in the play-offs division.
