Lakers Come Up Short in Cambridge
The Huron Perth Lakers AAA Major Peewees took to the road on December 16th to visit the Cambridge Hawks for an Alliance league game. The last battle between these two teams ended up in a rare scoreless draw… the Lakers were hoping to break the Cambridge shut out streak on this night.

The Lakers came out flying this game carrying the play early and often. They pressured the puck, took the body perfectly and outskated the Hawks every shift. Early in the game some good body checks revved up the Lakers and kept the tempo of the first period at a high level. With three minutes to play in the first, Bayley Boyes chipped a pass off the wall to Keigan Goetz in the corner who found Roland McKeown sneaking in from his defensive position. McKeown loaded up a laser shot that easily went high above the goalie's glove putting the Lakers in front 1-0. The Lakers continued to pressure the Hawks and ended up out shooting them 10-0 in the first period. The score could have been much higher but the Hawks goalie held them in the game.

The second period started with the Hawks scoring a short handed goal to tie the game at one… this took some of the jump out of the Lakers' attack. At the seven minute marker, the Hawks power play netted the go ahead goal. From the subsequent face off at centre, Derek Elliott pushed the draw towards the Hawks' net and simply out hustled the defenders getting a shot towards the net. Following the play was Taylor Moir who raised the puck over the goalie to tie the game 2-2. Three minutes later, the Hawks scored another power play goal taking a one goal lead. In the last minute, the Lakers power play finally clicked. Gregory Swan won his battle along the wall getting the puck to McKenzie Carter down low who found Garrett James streaking in from the blue line. James made no mistake tying the game at three heading to the third period.

The Lakers were hoping to regroup for the third period as they had carried the play for most of the first two periods only to find the score tied. The Hawks had a different idea as Cambridge scored three goals in the first two minutes to take a 6-3 lead. The host added another marker with four minutes to play making the final score 7-3. Despite the score there were many positive points to take from this game as the Lakers competed hard, out shot the Hawks and simply deserved a better fate on this night.

Next up is a game in Hensall on December 19th at 7:30 pm.
