It turned into a bit of a goalfest on Saturday in St. Marys when the Major Bantams squared off against the Lambton Jr. Sting.
The Sting sent a message early that they were here to score goals when the netted a power play goal just over a minute into the first period. The Lakers responded with a “we’ll show you we can score too” when they scored just over a minute later to knot the game at ones with a goal by
Mac MacSorley, assisted by
Riley McCabe. The Sting answered right back with a goal of their own to restore their lead. Late in the period, the Lakers made it 2-2 on a goal by
Greg Williams with assists to
PJ Conlon and
Jayden Landry. The Lakers finished off the period with a power play goal in the final minute by MacSorley with an assist to
Nick Castell to take a 3-2 lead.
Opening the second period, the Sting scored three goals in a 5+ minute span, including a power play goal, to put the Lakers in a 5-3 deficit. The Lakers chopped into that lead a minute later with an unassisted goal by Castell. A couple minutes later the Lakers tied it up with MacSorley’s hat trick goal, assisted by Landry and McCabe. The Lakers finished the period with a power play goal by
Iain Donnelly (assists to
Braydon Blight and MacSorley) to restore the one goal lead they had when the period started. Over the 15 minutes of the second period a total of six goals were scored in a display of goal scoring prowess by both teams.
The Lakers started the third period with a 6-5 lead and the benefit of a power play that carried over from the end of the second. Unfortunately, they would give up a short-handed goal to see the game once again tied, this time at 6-6. The remainder of the game would see both teams trade chances but the goal scoring for this game was done and the game ended in a 6-6 tie.
With the single point from this game the Lakers had tied the best regular season point total for the 1995's (25 points in Minor PeeWee). With 8 regular season games remaining, the Major Bantams are poised to have a “best ever” regular season for this age group.
