Major Bantams Defeat Spitfires in Close Contest in St. Marys
The Major Bantam Lakers played a tough, closely matched game on Saturday against the Windsor Jr. Spitfires in St. Marys and emerged with a well deserved win.

The first period was fast paced, penalty-free, and dead equal in shots at 8 each.

The second period picked up where the first period had ended and continued through the first half of the period. It was the Lakers who finally broke the deadlock when Michael Siddall swooped in to deposit the second rebound after Jared Zufelt had banged a rebound following a Devin Williams’ shot (see video below).

The Lakers followed this up with another goal a few minutes later after Kyle Sippel put the puck on net, Nick Castell banged away at the rebound, and then Greg Williams cruised in, drew the puck back and snapped it into the net (see video below).

That would be it for scoring in the period and the Lakers took a 2-0 lead into the dressing room between periods.

The third period saw the Lakers take a penalty five minutes to give the Spitfires their first and only power play of the game. The Spits made the most of the opportunity and scored with the man advantage to cut the Lakers' lead to just a goal. The battle continued between these two teams as the Spits pressed for the equalizer and the Lakers worked to prevent it. Something had to give and unfortunately it would be the Spitfires who would be successful in getting the equalizer with four minutes to go in the game. As time wound down it looked like the Lakers were going to have to settle for a tie but Mac MacSorley had other ideas. In the final minute, MacSorley took a pass from Sippel, gained the Spitfire zone and, using the Spitfires’ defenceman as a screen, blasted a slapshot over the Spits’ goalie’s left shoulder to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead (see video below).

The Spitfires pulled their goalie to try again for the equalizer but the Lakers were not to be denied the win and the all important 2 points as they push to solidify their hold on third place in the Eastern Division.
