Cambridge Wins Series as Major Bantams Look for Elusive Win
The Major Bantams wrapped up their second round series with the Cambridge Hawks on Saturday without the win they needed to extend the series.

The Lakers and Hawks had tied game 1 the Sunday before in a closely played contest that would set the tone for the series.

Game 2: February 2 in Palmerston
Game 2 saw the Hawks jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on a couple power play goals. The Lakers scored with just seconds to go in the period to narrow the gap.

The Lakers built on their goal by adding another in the first few minutes of the second period to tie the game 2-2. The Hawks responded with two goals of their own to restore their 2 goal lead. The Lakers cut the lead to just a goal and the period ended with the Lakers trailing 4-3.

The third period saw the Lakers tie the game at 4-4 with just four minutes to go. The back and forth play and momentum shifts between the two teams throughout the game to this point had counted for nothing and the final few minutes would decide the outcome. It was the Hawks who came up with the go ahead goal and won game 2 by a 5-4 score. Goal scorers for the Lakers were: Iain Donnelly (2), Carter Simpson, and Greg Williams. Assists went to: Braydon Blight, Riley McCabe, Jared Zufelt (2), Jayden Landry, Donnelly, and Williams.

Game 3: February 3 in Hespeler
The teams met again the next night and the Lakers got off to a good start by scoring the first goal midway through the period (Mac MacSorley from PJ Conlon and Jayden Landry). The Hawks managed to tie things up before the period ended.

The second period saw the Hawks score in the first period to take the lead and then add a power play goal in the final minute of the period to go up 3-1.

The third period didn’t see any scoring so with the 3-1 win the Hawks had pulled ahead 5 points to 1 point over the Lakers in the race to 6 points.

Game 4: February 6 in St. Marys
The Lakers now found themselves in a tough spot going into game 4 as it was a must win game, a tie wouldn’t be good enough. The first period was tightly played, scoreless, and relatively equal in shots.

The second period saw the Lakers get outshot 16 to 5 and go down a goal going into the third period. The Lakers got the tying goal they were looking for midway through the third period (Nick Castell from Riley McCabe and Greg Williams) so all that was left was to get the go ahead goal to extend the series. Try as they might, the Lakers were unable to get this goal and even with overtime the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

With the tie, the Hawks won the series and move on to play the Sun County Panthers in the Playdown semi-finals. The Lakers now move to the Playoff side of the post-season and play a quick best 2 of 3 series against Kitchener starting on Saturday at 5:30 pm in St. Marys.
