The Minor Atoms Have a Great Showing at the Vic Teal Tourney!
The boys put together their best winning streak of the season with 4 straight wins in St.Catherines as everyone on the bench contributed with strong efforts to achieve this!

Their first game against the Amherst Knights of the U.S.A. gave the team some confidence as the boys dominated the play and out shot Amherst 34 to 12. Amherst would score first though with 1:26 left in the period but Kyle Stanbur, 20 seconds later, tied the match at 1 assisted by Sam Dupuis. The Lakers would score again with 2:46 left in the second on a great rush by Joshua Zelek, assisted by Reid Campbell, and then Carter McLlwain scored unassisted before the end of the 2nd to give the team a 3-1 lead heading into the 3rd. Amherst would battle back as the Lakers coughed the puck up twice to allow 2 consecutive breakaways in the first 3 minutes of the third and Amherst tied the game at 3. At 9:11 of the 3rd, Kyle Stanbury gave the Lakers the lead again unassisted. But wait... Amherst would come back again and score their 3rd goal of the third to tie the game at 4 just 2 minutes later. With 4:39 left, Cody Renwick cleared the puck to Maxim Mulder who got the puck to Kyle Stanbury sending him in to score his 3rd of the game for the hat-trick and that would be enough as the boys would hang on to win game 1, 5-4. Bobby Mclachlan and Owen Hahn shared the duties in this match and got the job done as they faced several breakaways and odd man rushes.

Game 2 was against the Niagara Purple Eagles of U.S.A. After playing most of the 1st period in Niagara's end  Joshua Zelek opened the scoring on a end to end rush unassisted. The Lakers would go ahead by 2 in the second on a great tick tack toe passing play, but wait the goal was called back because the player scoring the goal was in the crease >?.>/? nice play though boys. At 12:13 of the 3rd, Kyle Stanbury scored unassisted to gain the 2-0 lead - no really 2-0 lead. Niagara would finally get 1 at 11:35 of the 3rd and tie the game at 7:37. As the Lakers were clearly the better team in this match they found themselves playing against 2 teams in this match (you know what that means) but never giving up with 47 seconds left in the game, Joshua Zelek like a rock at the point used his body to prevent Niagara from clearing the zone, picked up the puck and went in around the D and picked the corner to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead and the win. Oweh Hahn shut the door between the pipes in this one! Great job by all!

Day 2, game 3  vs Welland who was also undefeated going into this match. The boys carried the momentum from day 1 into this game and were working hard forcing the play. Braeden Burdett would put the Lakers on the board at 4:26 of the 1st, assisted by Shawn Barnett and Joshua Zelek. Welland would tie the game 2 minutes later. With the game tied at 2, at 7:43 of the second, Joseph Serpa would find the back of the net assisted by Carter McLlwain and Kyle Stanbury to take the lead, 2-1. But just 30 seconds later, Welland would tie the game at 2. Into the 3rd we go with a 2-2 tie. This time the Lakers would own the 3rd period. At 11:05, Sheldon Pryce would jump on a loose puck at center ice and with all 5 Welland players coming behind him went all the way on the breakaway getting a hard shot away from the slot and Braeden Burdett would knock in the rebound to take the lead 3-2 (Tanner Reid also picking up an assist). Then, with 7:47 left in the 3rd, Sheldon Pryce blocked a point shot from Welland sending Kyle Stanbury in to score again to give the team a 4-2 lead with Joshua Zelek also getting an assist. Bobby McLachlan was solid in net for this 4-2 win and another great team effort.

Game 4 vs the Buffalo Saints saw the Lakers gain some breathing room in this match. After a scoreless 1st period Carter McLlwain would bury one with the slap-shot to put the Lakers on the board assisted by Sam Dupuis. Buffalo would tie the game at 1 with 4 minutes left in the 2nd. Then at 3:15 of the second, Sam Dupuis would score on a nice pass from Braeden Burdett. 38 seconds later Jake Weston had the puck at the point and made a couple nice moves and nailed the top shelf to give the Lakers a 3-1 lead with Reid Campbell earning the assist. Buffalo would score again before the end of the 2nd making the game 3-2 heading into the third. At 11:51 of the 3rd, Sam Dupuis would score on a nice shot after some nice passes from Reid Campbell and Kyle Stanbury. 2 minutes later Sheldon Pryce kept the puck in along the boards and got it to Braeden Burdett who picked the corner to give the Lakers a 5-2 lead. Buffalo would get 1 more but at 4:43 Joseph Serpa picked the corner with a nice shot assisted by Kyle Stanbury. Then with 53 seconds left some more nice passing, Sheldon Pryce around to Tanner Reid who got the puck out to Sam Dupuis who scored his 3rd of the game for the hat-trick and a 7-3 win. Owen Hahn was solid in net for this match, great team work again boys.

After this match the team was entered in the skills competition which saw the Lakers go to the the final in the shoot-out and saw the Lakers win the power play competition. But most important the whole team participated and the team had fun doing it!!

Finishing 4th after the round robin play with a 4-0 record put the Lakers up against the Lambton Sting. Out of the gate in this match was end to end action but by the 4 minute mark of the 1st the Lakers would find themselves down 2-0. The boys battled right back though, at 3:14 Sam Dupuis scored assisted by Reid Campbell and Maxim Mulder. At 1:49 Carter McLlwain scored to tie the game assisted by Joshua Zelek and Joseph Serpa. At 1:13 Joshua Zelek gave the Lakers a 3-2 lead after the 1st assisted by Kyle Stanbury and Shawn Barnett. Wow what a period! Then the boys would jump to a 4-2 lead in the second on a goal by Sam Dupuis assisted by Kyle Stanbury. Then we seemed to hit the panic button, the flow from the bench to the ice changed heading into the third. Caught in long shifts and a shorter bench we gave up 5 goals in the 3rd period. Lambton would win 7-4.

Nothing to be ashamed of boys! Every player on the team earned points in this tournament and we made it to the final day this time!! Great job by all! And some great team fun at the Hotel!!
