Major Atoms extend unbeaten record to 9 with 3 point weekend
Written by Jeff Aarts

The Major Atom Lakers grabbed another 3 out of a possible 4 points yet again as they took on the Cambridge Hawks in home and home games this past weekend. Friday night the Lakers hosted the Hawks in Stratford looking to extend their 7 game unbeaten streak and build upon their win against Cambridge the previous Sunday. The Lakers got out ahead early as midway thru the first period Zac McCann would start off the scoring with an unassisted tally. The Hawks would not go away this game however as they responded to each of the Lakers markers with their own.

Scoring in the second for the Lakers were Tyler Hotson (From McCann) , Zach Teale (from Dakota Coultes) and Blake Wideman (from Coultes and Kayden Schooley). Finishing the Laker scoring in the 3rd was Wideman with his second goal of the game (from Hotson). The Lakers took the lead 5 times this game only to have the Hawks even things up each time as the score ended 5-5.

On Sunday the Major Atoms headed to the Galt Gardens to take on the Hawks for the 3rd straight game in a row. The Lakers unbeaten since the 3rd of October, looked to extend their run. The Lakers quickly found themselves down midway thru the first period of this penalty filled game, before a goal from Schooley with 1:39 left in the first (from Sheldon Pryce and Braeden McNaughton) would even things up. The second period would turn out to be all about penalties and special teams as only the last 20 seconds of the frame would be played 5 on 5. The Lakers could not capitalize on their chances while the Hawks found the net on their man advantage twice and added another to take a 4-1 lead on the Lakers into the third. The Major Atoms would not give up on this night however as they kept the pressure on Cambridge. A turnover at the Hawks blueline early in the third would allow Kaden Hoggarth to score to begin the rebound (assists by Mason Weber and Connor Aarts). Hoggarth would then add another unassisted goal to bring the Lakers within one. With Hardy Westman making the needed saves and shutting the door in the 3rd, the Lakers would continue to pressure and create chances. With just 2:31 left in the match Hoggarth would complete the hat trick to tie the game at 4-4 (assisted by Schooley). The Lakers would not settle for another tie however as they stepped it up again and with just 41 seconds left Zac McCann found the net (from Hotson and Schooley) to put the Lakers ahead for the first time in the game as they came out on top 5-4. Great effort Lakers.
