Minor PeeWees take 3 of 4 points on Opening Weekend
The Huron Perth Lakers Minor PeeWees came up against 2 hot goalies this past weekend but persevered in capturing 3 of 4 possible points.  The Lakers tied the Windsor Spitfires 2-2 in Milverton on Saturday Sept. 15,12 and travelled to Chatham on Sunday Sept. 16, 12 and came back from a 2 goal deficit to triumph 4-2 over the Chatham Cyclones.

In Milverton, Eric Vander Eyk opened the scoring in the first by blasting a shot past the Spitfire goalie after taking a pass from Zach Dow who had stolen the puck from a defender.  The game was a tight checking affair.  The Spitfires tied the game in the 2nd and took the lead early in the 3rd.    Joel Denotter tied the score with 6 minutes to go in a wild goal mouth scramble with Reid Campbell and Matthew Schwindt picking up the assists.  Goalie Owen Hahn kept the game close by making key saves.

In Chatham, the Lakers outplayed and out-chanced the Cyclones but could not solve the Chatham goalie.  The Cyclones opened the scoring in the first and increased that lead shortly after on the power play early in the 2nd.  Shortly after, the Lakers finally scored when Joshua Zelek deked the Chatham goalie after taking a slap pass from Braeden Burdett.     The Lakers had numerous opportunities but lady luck was not on their side.  Goalie Zach Hall had a TSN turning-moment with a breakaway save late in the second that gave the Lakers hope for a possible comeback.  The Lakers finally tied it with 8 minutes to go when Tyson Hall buried a Zelek rebound who was set up by Burdett.   Shortly after, the Lakers scored the go ahead goal when Zelek back-handed  a Hall setup who was fed the puck from Kyle Stanbury.  Burdett iced the victory with an empty net goal after chasing down a Stanbury alley-oop down the ice.

The Lakers now prepare for next weekend’s London Knights Early Bird tournament.  Go Lakers!
