Lakers go 2-2-0 in Markham
Lakers win 2, lose 2 at the Markham Fall Classic

The Huron Perth Lakers competed in their second tournament of the year this past weekend, at the Markham Fall Classic.  Friday afternoon, the Lakers were defeated 5-2 by the tournament finalists, Eastern Ontario Wild.  After the Wild opened the scoring, Mitchel Deelstra banged in a loose puck in the crease to tie the game up.  Rhys Vollmer earned an assist on the goal.  The Lakers could not gain any momentum and quickly gave up 3 goals during a 4 minute span at the end of the first and beginning of the second period.  With the score 4-1, Scott Stovel scored from a sharp angle on the powerplay, assisted by Kade Landry, to bring the Lakers within 2 goals, but that would be as close as they would get.

The Lakers bounced back in their 2nd game Friday, a 3-1 win over eventual tournament champions, Guelph Storm.  Noah Kuno opened the scoring, walking out from the corner and going short side, with just seconds left in the first period.  Tanner Johnson and Jacob Rooke assisted on the goal.  The Storm would tie the game, midway through the 2nd period, sliding one by goaltender Brock Baier.  Johnson would give the Lakers the lead, with 8 minutes left in the third, after being left all alone in front of the net.  Rooke, and Isaiah Waxman picked up the assists.  Vollmer, would score deflecting a Kuno pass, after his earlier goal was disallowed, to seal the win.  Deelstra picked up the other assist on the play.

Saturday afternoon, the Lakers used a pair of powerplay goals to defeat the Central Ontario Wolves, 2-1. Rooke scored the first goal of the game with 9 minutes left in the second period, roofing a shot short side.  Kuno picked up the only assist on the goal.  The lead was short lived as the Wolves beat goaltender Justin Hergott, who had a strong game, just over a minute later.  With time winding down, the Lakers converted on the powerplay as Mitchell Casey took a cross-ice pass from Johnson and buried one from the top of the circle for the game winning goal.  Deelstra also assisted on the goal.

Needing a win to advance, the Lakers came out flat in a 4-1 loss to the Ajax-Pickering Raiders.  The Lakers surrendered the first goal midway through the first period, but responded quickly, as Deelstra scored a pretty goal on a breakaway, to tie the game up.  Tanner Hertel, and Ben Derrough assisted on the Lakers lone goal.  The Raiders would add a goal just over a minute later, then would beat Baier, who kept the game close, with another goal with 3 seconds left in the 2nd period.  An empty net goal later, and the Lakers tournament would come to an end.

Saturday, the HPL will host the Cambridge Hawks, at "Laker Day" in Goderich, and will visit division rival Waterloo on Sunday.
