Lakers split weekend games
Minor Bantams defeat Cambridge on Laker day, fall to Waterloo on Sunday

The Minor Bantams celebrated Laker Day in Goderich on Saturday with a 4-3 win over the Cambridge Hawks.  The Lakers set the tone early, as Noah Kuno made no mistake, converting on a 3 on 1 rush,  just over 3 minutes into the game, to take a 1-0 lead.  Jacob Rooke assisted on the tally.  The lead was short-lived as the Hawks scored just over a minute later to tie the game.  Will Thibeault would score, unassisted, with 38 seconds left in the first period, cutting into the middle of the ice and beating the goalie 5-hole to close out the period.  Cambridge would fight back scoring on the powerplay to once again tie the game up, minutes into the second period.  Tanner Johnson would then score, unassisted, going on a solo end to end rush to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead.  Scott Stovel would close out the Laker scoring, banking one in off the goalie from a tough angle to increase the lead.  Ben Derrough picked up the lone assist on the game winner.  Cambridge would add a goal midway through the 3rd period, but the Lakers buckled down and preserved the win with good team defence.

Sunday, brought a tough battle with division rival Waterloo.  The Lakers dominated the first period, controlling the play, but were unable to capitalize on any scoring chances.  The second period was much more even in play, with the Lakers finally capitalizing on the powerplay, as a bouncing puck shot from Kade Landry at the point, found its way behind a screened goaltender.   Goaltender Brock Baier was sharp when called upon, including a terrific blocker save from in tight, as the Lakers carried a lead into the 3rd period.  Waterloo would finally solve Baier 3 minutes into the third converting a give and go, before scoring the game winner with just under 5 minutes left in the game.  HPL finished the game with a 21-11 edge in shots, but could not beat the Waterloo goaltender, who stopped a pair of breakaways during the game.

Tuesday night, the Lakers will face the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs in Komoka.
