Major Atoms with Two Big Divisional Wins over Weekend

The Major Atoms recorded two big wins over the weekend to climb up the standings as they defeated second place Brantford 4-2 Saturday night at home in St.Marys, then travelled to Waterloo to play the Wolves on Sunday afternoon and came away with a hard fought 2-1 win.

On Saturday night, Patrick Holloway opened the scoring from Tanner Dietz, and Camden Daigle. Then Daigle bulged the twine from Dietz, and Holloway. Brantford then responded to pull within one, but back came the Lakers after some successful penalty killing got the eventual game winner, as Dietz buried a rebound in the top shelf, from a Luke deVries rush, assisted by Holloway. Then in the third period holding a 3-2 lead, Cole Melady added a power play goal to clinch the win, from Logan Harmer, and Izac Blum. Kyle Powers recorded the win in goal, and aided the penalty killing prowness, as he made some key saves along the way.

Sunday afternoon in Waterloo, against divisional rival Wolves at RIM Park Manulife Arena, the Lakers played a strong contest , and came away with a 2-1 win . After a scoreless first period, Luke Gaylor scored with 2:22 left in the second period from Sam Sedley, and Brady Ballantyne to go up by one. It stayed that way till early in the third when the Wolves capitalized 2 minutes in to the period to tie the game. With 6:44 left the Lakers killed off a 5-3, as they ran into penalty trouble late in the third as Aaron Waugh made some keys saves throughout but especially on the PK, enabling the team to keep the score tied at 1-1, with less than 4 minutes to go. Exactly 1:34 after the penalty kill and 3:16 remaining Daigle scored from Dietz, and Sedley for the game winner. Waugh was solid in goal, as the entire defense and forwards played a strong two way game.

Next weekend its back to Kitchener to face the first place Rangers at Activia Arena Sat 12 noon, then Sunday night travel to Cambridge Hawks at 6pm Galt Gardens.
