Valuable Information for Minor Bantam's - Jesse's Coaching Philosophy

Jesse Cole - Head Coach, Huron Perth Lakers Minor Bantam (2000)

What are your expectations for attendance, arrival times and dress codes for games and practices?
Playing AAA hockey means players and family are willing to make a big commitment. Vacations should be planned around the Lakers schedule, if possible. Illness or dangerous driving conditions are a valid reason to miss a practice or game.  Players should arrive 60-75 minutes prior to game time. For practice, 30 minutes before is a reasonable time line. At certain times throughout the season players will be asked to arrive earlier for practice for team meetings or workouts.

Dress code for games will be a shirt, tie and dress pants. No hats for games.

How do you plan to distribute ice time?
Ice time will be distributed fairly, but may vary according to position and situations. The team will include nine forwards (three lines), six defense (three pairs), and two goalies. We will focus on teaching the players structure, systems, positioning, roles and responsibilities in all areas of the ice.  Every player will get the opportunity to learn all aspects and situations of the game (five on five, penalty kill and power play). At certain times players may receive additional ice time based on hard work, a particular game, situations, or roles (key face offs, line matching, power play, penalty kill etc.) Ultimately a player’s work ethic, strengths, and position will determine how often they are used in special team situations. Players will be expected to play different positions and should expect to frequently play with different line mates and defense partners.
Do you intend to add off-ice sessions of any kind?
We tend to have off ice workouts during the season either before or after practice. Before the start of the season we will attempt to arrange a team social event for team building and bonding.
What are your tournament plans?
We will look to take part in four tournaments. One early in the season for team bonding, and two throughout the season.  In January 2014 we will play in the 2nd Annual Great Lakes Cup – our home tournament.
How will you balance individual development, team development and emphasis on winning?
Our coaching staff is committed to developing the players as athletes and character individuals. Our focus will be on 1) Accountability 2) Skills and Development and 3) Structure and Systems. Our practices will focus on these three aspects. Practices will be spent working on individual skills and development for players and their position. Along with individual skills and development, our practices will focus a great deal on structure and systems. Players will learn all areas of the game with roles, responsibilities, positioning, and options. We will have a set game plan and system in place so the players can learn all aspects of the game and be a strong team with a strong team game. Complete dedication to team play is essential to achieve success at the Minor Bantam AAA level. We will be a strong team in all three zones of the ice, special teams, and face offs. The team is stronger than the individual. We will be known as a strong team, not an individual team. Key principles of our approach will be hard work, passion, discipline, and team toughness. Players will have the freedom and be encouraged to be creative, and play to their strengths, yet be willing to play with a team first approach. A team that competes hard, develops skills, and is consistent in their approach will often win more games than they lose. We will be a prepared hockey team. As a coaching staff, our success will be measured by how well the players have mastered these attributes. Winning will be important for both players and coaches.

What is your approach to team and individual discipline?
Each player will be expected to meet the high standards of the Laker organization. Sportsmanship, respect for teammates, opponents and team officials. Dedication to team rules and principles will be taken seriously. Failure to do so will result in discipline (example - missing regular ice time). Progressive discipline could include missing a period in the game.  If the problem persists, a meeting with player, parents, and/or with a parent representative will take place.

What initiatives, objectives and goals do you have for your team?

To be a top half team in the Alliance. To compete with the top teams throughout Ontario, league, and tournaments. To learn all areas of the game and to be known as a team that plays a strong team game. Our objective is to improve our standings in our division and the overall Alliance standings.
