Lakers fill holes for local Jr Clubs (written by Steve Rice; Stratford Beacon Herald)
Down 2-0 on the road in Cambridge Saturday night the Stratford Cullitons needed someone to kickstart a rally.

That somewhat unlikely sparkplug turned out to be a kid playing in his first junior hockey game, having celebrated his 16th birthday just three weeks ago.

Josh Higgins of Stratford scored at 15:37 of the second period to put the Cullitons on the board and set his team on the course to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory.

The Cullitons, with their third straight win, raised their record to 7-10-2 for 16 and remained tied for sixth place with the Guelph Hurricanes, 8-3 winners over Listowel Saturday night.

Higgins was one of three players called from the Huron-Perth Lakers midgets to fill holes in the Cullitons lineup, joining fellow forward Liam Kelly and defenceman Greg Hansford also 16-year-olds from Stratford.

His goal came against Michael Roefs, a 20-year-old who was called up from the Woodstock Navy Vets of the Midwestern Junior C Hockey League for Cambridge's two weekend games.

After Higgins cut the lead to 2-1, Drew Gross scored on a powerplay at 18:05 to send the teams to the intermission tied 2-2.

Mitch Brooks gave the Cullitons their first lead at 12:54 of the third period but less than two minutes later Marcellis Subban tied the game on a Cambridge powerplay with Stratford's Nick Nigro in the box for slashing.

Less than a minute after that Nigro helped atone for his lapse in judgment, assisting on the game-winning goal by Dylan Wettlaufer.

Trevor Sauder earned three assists and regained a share of the club scoring lead with defenceman Ryker Killins. Both players have 10 goals and 17 assists.

Nick Caldwell made 36 saves for his second win of the season.

CYCLONES LOSE

At Guelph, the Cyclones also got a goal from a Huron-Perth Lakers midget in their 8-3 loss. Broedy Karelse, a Listowel native playing in his second game as a callup from the Lakers, scored in the third period.
