After collecting 4 of 6 possible points last weekend on
their annual southern road swing, the Minor Midget Lakers were back in action
in Brantford on Sunday afternoon.
With the team sitting in the middle of the pack in the Alliance standings, they were
out looking to add to their point total to secure a play-off berth. A
somewhat choppy first period yielded no goals for either team. Likewise, the
second period ended in a scoreless fashion, with the 99ers holding the edge in
shots and scoring chances. Laker goalie Garrett Golley made several
high-quality saves to keep Brantford off the board heading into the break.
The 99ers were finally able to break through with a goal
early in the third period when Laker defender Austin Mumby broke his stick and
was unable to challenge the Brantford shooter who drilled it high over Golley’s
shoulder. Minutes later, Brantford would double their lead on a bar-down
laser that seemed to tip off of something in front of the net.
Laker forward Bobby Leis narrowly missed a goal, ringing a
shot off the post and after that, Carter Schoonderwoerd looked to have a good
chance off the rush when his stick chose an unfortunate time to disintegrate.
Unfortunately, the boys were not able to get on the
scoreboard in this one. Brantford took the game by a score of 2-0.
With four games left, the team will refocus this week and
come out hard next weekend against London and Kitchener on Saturday and Sunday
respectively.
