HPL Minor Peewees Win Great Lakes Cup

After advancing to the playoff rounds in all three of their prior tournament competitions this season, the HPL Minor Peewees were finally able to reap the rewards of the hardwork and “hoist the cup!”

The boys opened the Great Lakes Cup tournament on Friday morning with a 3-2 win over Kitchener Jr. Rangers, as well as a 9-0 win over Sudbury Wolves later that afternoon. On Saturday, they stuck with those winning scores and skated to a 9-0 victory over West Seneca Wings and a 3-2 win over the Chatham Kent Cyclones.  With four wins and zero losses the boys finished at the top of their pool and advanced to the semi-final game vs. the Sault Saint Marie Greyhounds on Sunday morning. Once again, at the end of 40 minutes of play the team had achieved yet another 3-2 victory and had finally earned a spot in their first championship game of the season.

As luck would have it, their opponents in the finals would be the Waterloo Wolves, who the boys are currently battling with for first place in their divisional league play. At the drop of the puck, it was clear that the Lakers were ready to “start on time” and they took a 1-0 lead in the first shift of the game. The boys would start the second period the same way, extending their lead to 2-0, before adding another on a powerplay to go ahead three to nill. Waterloo attempted to battle back with a late push in the third, but the HPL squad was able to stifle most of their offensive attacks. Final score... yet again… 3-2 for the Lakers!

Our coaching staff and players would like to convey our gratitude to the tournament organizers and parent volunteers who helped to make this tournament a success. The players would also like to thank the major midget HPL team for allowing them to use their dressing room for the weekend.
