This past weekend saw the Minor Atoms play Cambridge Hawks and the Brantford 99'ers
The Lakers took on what is becoming a great rival in the Cambridge Hawks, in one of the first games that saw every Lakers ready to commit to doing what it takes to compete at this level, our fans were treated to a great Minor Atom hockey game that was end to end excitement as both teams loaded up scoring chances. In the end the Lakers could not get that bounce at the right time. Hotson notched another 2 goal performance with helpers to McCann and Pryce, The Lakers were hoping to carry the team momentum into the 1st Place Brantford 99ers on Sunday.
The Game saw the same gritty Lakers form the day before battle hard and outwork the 99ers team. The Lakers lead 3-2 as we had the Brantford squad on their heels with 2 mins remaining in the 2nd period. BUT THEN for almost 2 full periods the officials allowed a great game to be played but felt that they needed to become the spot light of the game, after the 99ers got the tying goal off the PP the very next shift after Lakers goalie Newson made a beauty save a 99ers player steamrolled over him to knock the puck lose, in the pile up a penalty shot was awarded for a Lakers player covering the puck in the crease to allow the 99ers to take the lead 4-3. To continue the spot light on the officials the Lakers received 6 straight penalties ( 2 of the phantom variety) as the Lakers spent the majority of the 3rd period down 5 on 3 giving the Brantford lots of room on their home ice to take the victory. Very proud of the team for battling hard even when other circumstances took over the game and continuing to compete each shift.
