Welcome Vinny Merante as Huron Perth Lakers U16 Head Coach
Vinny was born and raised in Niagara Falls, NY. He has grown through the various hockey ranks in Western New York before making the transition to play junior hockey in Ontario. Vinny had a dream to play hockey at the highest level possible. After 3 years of Junior B and Junior A hockey he landed a spot with Wilfred Laurier University playing 4 years on the varsity men’s hockey team. After one month of pursuing the game overseas in Europe upon graduation, Vinny recognized that the game took him as far as it was meat to as a player. From there, his passion towards the game and the understanding of the impact hockey can have on ones life led him to immediately pursue a coaching career.
Vinny worked 3 seasons as the assistant coach for Laurier University Men’s Varsity team. He also co-owns Redline in Kitchener which is an off-ice training facility for ambitious athletes and eager adults as a place to workout and a community to call home.
Vinny’s coaching philosophy is “person over player” mentality. We are meant to live our lives and play the game with a thankful and passionate attitude. This type of character that can be shaped through the adversity we face in life and hockey can really allow for a boy to grow into a man.
That is why I love the sport. It is about the person you become through the hockey journey. Teamwork, perseverance, selflessness, surrender to a process, and leaving one’s comfort zone are just some of the tremendous life lessons that hockey can teach.
As a coach, it is my duty to make sure these young players recognize their potential and become all they can be both on and off the ice as well as recognize that hockey is something we do and it does not define who we are.
