First Coaches Announced for 2008-09 Season
Coaching a zone team takes a tremendous amount of dedication and skill. It also provides those born into coaching an opportunity to work with some of the finest high-performance athletes you could assemble. It is with great pride that the Huron Perth Lakers Executive makes the first in a series of announcements of the coaches assembled for the 2008-2009 season.

The Coach for each team will be announced after the 2007-08 team for that birth year finishes their final game. The first two coaching positions announced are therefore for our youngest and oldest teams: Minor Atom and Major Midget.

MINOR ATOM
Shawn Hertel ([email protected] or 519-393-8078)
Shawn is a welcome addition to the list of Lakers coaches as someone who has excellent experience coaching young hockey players in the Novice and Atom levels. Shawn's teams have achieved back-to-back league championships at the Atom Girls A/AA level in 2005 through 2007. He's also been a trainer and Assistant Coach for a Novice team. This breadth of experience on the bench with the age group he has been selected to coach should serve both him and his players well.

Shawn's philosophy emphasizes hard work, respect, fun, life skills as well as providing the opportunity to meet new friends and learn the game of hockey.

Shawn is a resident of Sebringville.

MAJOR MIDGET
Chad Smalley ([email protected] or 519-271-0987)

Chad is a returning Lakers coach as he coached last year's Major Midget team to a successful season. Chad is an Intermediate Level Coach with 14 years coaching experience – including 8 League Championships & 2 OHF Silver Medals. Prior to coming to the Lakers, he was the Assistant Coach with the Stratford Warriors ‘AA’ Major Midgets and was instrumental in assembling a team that went on to win Silver at the OHF Midget Championships & had 3 players drafted by OHL teams.

His past experience also includes being Assistant G.M. with both the St. Marys Lincolns Jr. B team and the Aylmer Aces as well as a stint as the General Manager for the Aylmer Aces.

Chad is also a Player Scout for the University of Western Ontario and a resident of Stratford.
