Huron Perth Laker Alumni Captain of Team Canada
"When I was 15, I joined the Huron Perth Lakers AAA team, where I met some of my lifelong best friends. I didn’t know it yet, but their support would help me get through the lowest period of my life." -Tyler McGregor, Team Canada Co-Captain, Milano Cortina 2026 Canadian Paralympic Sledge Hockey Team

Tyler McGregor is a Huron Perth Lakers Alumni, and quite possibly one of our association's most inspiring player journeys into professional hockey. The Lakers are keen to cheer on McGregor and Team Canada in the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milano!

Watch Tyler's story as shared by sponsor, Air Canada.

This is the true story of Tyler McGregor, once an elite p
rospect whose dream ended abruptly. In the face of the impossible, a new dream emerged. We follow his journey from hospital hallways to the ice in Milan. Proving that from a broken dream, another can take flight.

 CANADIAN PARALYMPIC COMMITTEE HIGHLIGHT:

Tyler McGregor has emerged as one of Canada’s most respected leaders not just on and off the ice in Para ice hockey, but in Paralympic sport. In late 2024, Hockey Canada named him to its new National Team Athlete Committee, reflecting his influence in sport and advocacy. That same year, he captained Canada to its first World Para Ice Hockey Championship title in seven years, defeating the USA 2–1 in the final. McGregor was second in tournament scoring (9 goals, 9 assists) and led in plus/minus (+18).A fixture on the national team since 2012, McGregor has collected three world titles (2013, 2017, 2024), Paralympic silver medals in 2018 and 2022, and a Paralympic bronze in 2014. Highlights include scoring two goals in 13 seconds in the 2017 worlds final and ranking third in scoring at the 2018 Paralympic Games. He became captain of Canada’s Para ice hockey team in 2019.As a Canadian Paralympic veteran, McGregor was named a co-captain of the Milano Cortina 2026 Canadian Paralympic Team.

Beyond competition, McGregor serves on the Canadian Paralympic Athletes’ Council, co-chairs the Own the Podium Athlete Advisory Committee, sits on the Make-A-Wish Canada board, and has spent 14 years as a keynote speaker. In 2023, his Terry Fox-inspired “Sledge Skate of Hope” covered 420 km and raised $100,000 for cancer research, building on $30,000 raised in 2021. In April 2025, he assisted at a camp in Mexico to help develop Para ice hockey there.McGregor’s path was shaped by resilience. Once an OHL prospect, he broke his leg at 15 and was later diagnosed with spindle cell sarcoma, leading to leg amputation on the day of the 2010 OHL Draft. Determined to return to hockey, he first played with a standing amputee team before switching to Para ice hockey in 2011. Just a year later, he debuted with Team Canada, beginning a career that blends elite performance with tireless advocacy for Para sport, disability awareness, and cancer research.
