Two Lakers Chosen for Ontario U17 Camp as Lakers Well Represented at ALLIANCE U17 Camp this Past Weekend
The 2009 ALLIANCE Hockey Under 17 Camp Program of Excellence was held this past weekend at the Southwood Community Complex in Woodstock with the Lakers well-represented at this event for the top 1993-born players.

There were 11 players from the 2008-09 Lakers Minor Midget team who attended the Mini-Camp on Friday. 170 players from across ALLIANCE Hockey attended the Mini-Camp and were divided into ten teams that each played a total of three games throughout the day. Following a dinner for the teams and team staff there was a round table session on hockey and substance abuse. Following the round table, the names of those advancing to the Main Camp were announced. The number of participants advancing to the Main Camp were enough for four teams.

Six Lakers advanced to the Main Camp which began Friday night with an orientation and player measurements (height and weight). The six Lakers advancing were: Jordan Currie, Mac Nichol, David Dalby, Brett O'Drowsky, Mitchell McIntosh and Garrett Meurs. During the Main Camp, held on Saturday and Sunday, each team played the other three teams and particpated in other activities including fitness testing, a round table session on what hockey has to offer, team building, and a team photo. The day ended with a final meeting and announcement of those players advancing to the Ontario U17 Camp being held in Ottawa on June 25-28.

Selected for the Provincial Camp from the Lakers were Garrett Meurs as one of 5 forwards and Mac Nichol as an alternate defenseman. As an alternate, Mac will attend if someone else backs out or is unable to attend. At the camp in Ottawa there will be 80 players from across the Province hoping to make the Ontario team that will participate in the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge being held after Christmas in Timmins. Asked to comment on his selection to advance to the Ontario Camp, Garrrett said, "I'm honoured to have been chosen as one of the forwards and am excited for the opportunity to try out for a spot on Team Ontario. Thanks to my coaches and teammates for a great season with the Lakers."

With the Lakers having 2 out of 13 participants chosen by the end of the Main Camp this was truly a great showing for our organization. Congratulations to Garrett, Mac, and all the Lakers who participated in the ALLIANCE Hockey U17 Camp. You've done us all proud. Garrett, we wish you well in Ottawa and Mac... not wishing ill of any of the other defensemen but we hope you'll be attending too.

Way to go Lakers!

Mac & Garrett recently modelled the new Lakers sweaters at the Lakers Annual Banquet held earlier this month.
