Where do the top coaches in North America go to get the latest information on hockey? For the last 23 years they have been making the annual trek to the University of Windsor on the second weekend of June for the Roger Neilson Coaches Clinic.
This year a large Huron Perth Lakers contingent attended the conference which featured speakers from the coaching staff of several NHL teams (Boston, Calgary, Minnesota, NY Islanders, Toronto) as well as NCAA, AHL and European league coaches.
Informative videos were shown throughout the weekend and topics covered by the speakers were wide-ranging and included: goal-setting, penalty-kill, goaltending, power play, forechecking, time and space, hockey players in "the zone", neutral zone counters, five man attack, energy system development, and teaching & improving hockey sense. There was also an on-ice demonstration and team-building practical.
The participation of the Lakers coaches in this conference is part of the Lakers' organization's strategy to invest in and develop our coaches.
