Major Atom Lakers Beat 1st Place Team
The Major Atom Lakers finished the weekend on a high note beating the 1st place Waterloo Wolves 2-1 on Sunday November 27, 2011 in Goderich.  This victory removed the sour taste from losing on Saturday November 26, 2011 to the Elgin Middlesex Chiefs 3-2 in Milverton; even though the Lakers outplayed and outshot the Chiefs 36-19.

In Milverton on Saturday, the Lakers opened the scoring when Sam Dupuis pick-pocketed a loose puck in a goal net scramble and tucked the puck into the net before anyone knew what he was doing.  Assists were handed out to Kyle Stanbury and Ethan Roche who fought hard to free the puck.  The Chiefs tied it in the dying seconds of the 1st and opened a lead at the beginning of the 2nd.  The Lakers tied the game at 2-2 with 7 minutes to go when Ethan Roche put the puck  into the open net after being fed a pass from Stanbury.  Unfortunately the Chiefs took the lead again with 3 minutes to go when a shot from behind the net ricocheted off skates in front into the net.  The Lakers fought valiantly to secure the equalizer but the Chief goalie stood on his head and had lady luck riding on his side to prevent that.  Goalie Bobby McLachlan made key saves when necessary including a game saving breakaway before the Chiefs secured the victory.

In Goderich on Sunday, the Lakers opponent was the 1st place Waterloo Wolves.  The Lakers opened the scoring at the 2nd minute mark when Joshua Zelek, after just coming off the bench, took a pass from Carter McLlwain at centre ice and walked around the defender and roofed a goal over the stunned Waterloo goalie's blocker.  Waterloo tied it 6 minutes later on a seeing eye shot from the top of the circle that found its way into the net.  A couple of minutes later, Maxim Mulder pinched at the blue line and from the top of the circle, rocketed a shot over the bewildered Waterloo goalie's glove.  This goal proved to be the game winner as there was no additional scoring in the 2nd and 3rd periods.  Goalie Owen Hahn came up big on numerous occasions to maintain the lead.  The effort by the Lakers was probably their most rewarding as a strong team game resulted in a solid 2-1 victory.

The Lakers confidence was definitely boosted with the victory over the Wolves and shows them what they can accomplish when playing well as a team.  The Lakers are at the Hamilton Bulldog hockey tournament this weekend and are eager to hit the ice again.  Go Lakers!!!
