2014 Lakers take Great Lakes Cup!!!
The U12 Huron Perth Lakers were part of a historic moment this season at the Great Lakes Cup, for the first time in the organizations history both the U12 and U14 teams took home the titles!! It was a great weekend and the Laker organization should be very proud of themselves for putting on such a top notch event!!
The 2014's started the weekend off with a 7-1 win over Halton Hills and a 6-1 win over Whitby. Saturday would see more of the same with a 6-1 victory over Guelph and a 7-4 win over York Simcoe. An undefeated record in round robin play would secure the top seed in the tournament and set up a rematch with York Simcoe early Sunday morning. After some parent comments from the Express were overheard in the lobby, the boys had some bulletin board material and didn't disappoint steamrolling to a 10-1 win in the quarterfinal. The semi finals saw a familiar foe in the Guelph Gryphons who always play this team hard. It would be no different but the boys in black and maroon would come out on top by a 3-1 margin setting up a final with league rival Brantford 99ers.
These two teams had faced off in a final before in the 2024/25 season which saw Brantford come out on top 3-2 in a shoot out. The young Lakers were determined that this was not to happen again but would stumble out of the gate giving up a goal early in the first period. It would be the wake up call they needed as they would score the next 5 to take a 5-1 lead mid way through the 2nd period. The 99ers are a proud bunch and as expected were not going to go out easy, they would find the net twice cutting the lead to 5-3. A comeback was not meant to be on this day however as HPL would score twice more on route to a 7-3 win and a Great Lakes Cup championship!!
It was a great weekend overall, a highlight for our group was using the U18 room all weekend and giving the boys a taste of what life in the future might hold. A big thank you to the U18 Lakers for doing this for us, very much appreciated!!! It was also great being beside the U14's all weekend as they resided in the U16 room, the boys supported and pushed each other all weekend on route to both teams leaving with the titles!!
Next up on the horizon for the U12's is finishing out the regular season and gearing up for we hope to be a long and fruitful playoff run.
