Lakers Major Atoms Even Brantford Series 1-1
The Huron Perth Lakers AAA hosted the Brantford 99’ers in Stratford on Feb. 22nd as the Lakers looked to even the six point series at a win a piece. The winter weather forced the Lakers to play the game short two players and made the coaching staff shuffle the line up. Carter Stewart moved to right wing while Jared McCann and Nathan Templeman took turns playing defense. The Brantford 99’ers started quickly and owned the first few minutes of the game. Brantford was rewarded with a goal 5 minutes into the period. Some good goaltending by Kent Taylor help keep the score low as the 99’ers were continually pushing deep into the Lakers zone. About one minute later the Lakers capitalized on a power play when Bayley Boyes and Templeman teamed up to get the puck in front of the Brantford net where Keigan Goetz jammed home the games tying goal.

Early in the 2nd period Alex Peters made several good plays to keep the puck in the 99’ers zone. With 6 minutes left in the period Maverick Petrie applied some great fore checking pressure. Petrie directed the puck to Ryan Stulp-Jacobson who fired a good hard wrist shot that just made it past the goalie putting the Lakers in front 2-1. Four minutes later Gregory Swan dumped the puck down low in the Brantford zone to Bayley Boyes who was flying in to lead the fore checking. Boyes flipped a nice pass to McCann who stepped out of the corner and picked the top corner over the goalies shoulder to increase the Lakers lead to 3-1. Early in the 3rd period Garret James made a very good defensive play on a one on one play against one of their top players. Quinton Haddock and Derek Elliott used their speed to be first on the puck all night and deserved to get on the score sheet but to no avail. With 22 seconds remaining in the game Brantford scored to make the score 3-2. Right off the next face off the 99’ers got the puck deep into the Lakers zone and stormed our goal crease. The defense managed to control the 99’ers and Taylor made a couple of fine saves to keep the final score at 3-2. The series continues on Saturday when the Lakers travel to Brantford and then host the 99’ers on Sunday in Brussels at 1 pm. Written by Jeff Swan
