Lakers Major Atoms Trounce Jr. Rangers
The Huron Perth Lakers AAA Major Atoms hosted the Kitchener Jr. Rangers at the Dufferin Arena in Stratford on Feb. 6th. The Dufferin arena has not been kind to the Lakers this year so the team was anxious to put forth a good effort. This was the 2nd game of their Alliance League play downs with the series tied at one point each.

The Jr. Rangers came out flying and carried the play to the Lakers in the first two minutes. Goalie Kent Taylor made some good saves to keep the Rangers off the score board. At the 2:31 mark of the 1st period Maverick Petrie took a solid hit as he moved the puck to a streaking Bayley Boyes at centre ice. Boyes used his speed to beat the Ranger defenders and scored the first goal of the game. Six seconds later Derek Elliott moved the puck to Quinton Haddock who flew past the Ranger defenders and ripped home the second goal.

The 2nd period started like the first period with the Rangers carrying the play early. While on the power play the Rangers scored a goal on a screen shot which Taylor did not see. At the 7 minute marker some good fore checking by Nathan Templeman and Keigan Goetz help set up Maverick Petrie in front of the net. Petrie buried a good shot to make the score 3-1 for the Lakers. Twenty seconds later Boyes took the puck deep into the Rangers zone and feathered a nice pass to Haddock who made a great shot for the Lakers 4th goal. Minutes later Templeman picked up a loose puck at the top of the right face off circle and fired a high shot that went off the glove of the Ranger goalie and fell behind the goalie in the net to make the score 5-1. With about a minute left in the 2nd period Carter Stewart made a fine play to pinch down low and keep the puck in the Ranger zone. Stewart pushed the puck to Jared McCann and he lifted a high shot into the Ranger net making the score 6-1 Lakers.

The 3rd period saw the Lakers defense shine as the Garrett James, Carter Stewart, Connor Shaw, Alex Peters and Ryan Stulp-Jacobson continued to control the play. One minute into the 3rd period Stulp-Jacobson stopped a clearing attempt by the Rangers and chipped a nice pass to McCann. McCann took a hard low shot and Gregory Swan pulled in the rebound and scored the Lakers 7th goal. Goalie Cole Willemsen played the third period and had to be sharp especially while killing off a couple of penalties. Willemsen made some sharp stops to keep the Rangers at one goal. The final score was Lakers 7 and the Jr. Rangers 1.

The Major Atoms travel to Kitchener on Feb. 10th and then host Kitchener on Feb. 11th in Brussels at 1 pm.
