  • Recap
The HPL PeeWee's played 4 very close games in the Golden Blade Tournament.

Playing without 3 defencemen in their opening game, the team moved out in front of the Gloucester Rangers 3-1 but failed to hold the lead, eventually losing 6-4. In their second game of the day, a hard fought match resulted in a 1-0 HPL win over the Grey Bruce Highlanders.  Day 2 saw the Lakers draw the Richmond Hill Stars for their first match.  Despite early pressure the team was unable to score on their chances eventually falling behind 2-0.  A late 5 on 3 HPL powerplay brought the team to within one.  The team was unable to cash in again, despite a number of good scoring opportunities, and lost 2-1. In their final game of the tournament, the team played the Hamilton Reps. The teams entered the third period tied at 2, with the HPL holding a 13-5 edge in shots. A third period lapse resulted in a 15 - 2 edge in shots for the Reps. Exceptional HPL goaltending kept the final score 2-2.

With 1 win, a tie and 2 losses, the team did not make the final.  A very different result could have been possible with more consistent play throughout the tournament. That said, it was a great opportunity for teammates to get to know one-another and to look forward to the team's season opener on September 20th in Stratford.

Jayden Landry (Gowanstown) led all HPL scorers with a goal and 3 assists, Cole Ciccone (Wasaga Beach) and P.J. Conlon (Goderich) had a goal and 2 assists, and Greg Williams (St. Marys) had 2 goals.  Singles went to Ben Kirwin (Embro), Matthew McCracken (Listowel), and Travis Bender (Listowel). Jordan Pache (Exeter) and Mackinley O'Keefe (Goderich) also picked up assists.  Goaltending duties were split between Ben Errington (Auburn) and Joe Metzger (Seaforth), with Errington facing Gloucester and Richmond Hill and Metzger facing Grey Bruce and Hamilton.

  • Recap
Despite some of their most consistent efforts of the year, the HPL PeeWees returned home Sunday sporting an 0 – 4 record in the Tim Horton’s International Invitational Ice Hockey Tournament.

Game 1 saw the team draw the Ottawa Sting.  The game was competitive from start to finish, with the outcome only determined by a Sting empty net goal in the last minute of play. Both teams traded scoring chances throughout the game, with special teams ending up being the difference. With the game scoreless, the Lakers took some uncharacteristic penalties, facing a lengthy 5 on 3 late in the first period. The Sting scored on the 5 on 3, as well as on the subsequent 5 on 4.  The Lakers pulled to within 1 early in the 2nd when Ben Kirwin buried home a rebound on the short-side, off assists from Jordan Pache and P.J. Conlon. Game MVP was Joe Metzger for strong play between the pipes.

The Lakers 2nd game was against the Ohio Blue Jackets.  Unfortunately for the Lakers, Ohio, a team focused almost exclusively on tournament play, had the best player the team had faced all year. The Blue Jackets also played an extremely strong team game, moving the puck quickly and often. Their puck movement caused positional break-downs for the Lakers, often leading to good Blue Jacket scoring opportunities. The game’s final score was 5 – 0. Tyler McNaughton was the Lakers Game MVP, largely as a result of some spirited physical play.

Sunday morning saw the team play league rivals, the Brantford 99’ers. Down a forward due to a suspension, the team juggled lines and went with 5 defencemen. The team got off to a strong start, scoring first on a powerplay when Carter Strachan banged home a rebound off assists from Greg Scott and Austin Chaffe.  The team was then handed 4 penalties within a 3½ minute span.  Brantford was able to capitalize twice and took a 2-1 lead into the 3rd. They increased their lead to 3-1 when they scored another powerplay goal early in the period.

Showing lots of character, the Lakers fought back to tie the game off 2 more powerplay goals of their own. Strachan scored his 2nd goal of the game off some good down low effort in front of the net.  Mackinley O’Keefe and Cole Ciccone picked up assists.  The game’s tying goal was off the stick of Iain Donnelly who let a rocket go from the blueline.  Assists were picked up by Conlon and Greg Williams. Unfortunately, sloppy play at their own blueline led directly to Brantford’s go-ahead goal with just over 2 minutes to play. They iced the victory with a late empty net goal. Laker Game MVP went to Carter Strachan who played a solid game both on the blueline and as a forward.

In the team’s last game of the tournament, they fell 5 – 1 to the Welland Tigers. The team again picked up the game’s first goal, this time on the powerplay when Strachan notched his third goal of the tournament, off an assist by McNaughton. The Lakers could not maintain sustained pressure, and allowed Welland to tie the game late in the 1st, also on the powerplay.

The team entered the 3rd period down 2-1 and were beginning to pressure the Tigers deep in their own end. Unfortunately, the team gave up a short-handed goal at the 10 minute mark of the period and could not recover, eventually seeing Welland score 2 more goals, both on the powerplay. The Laker MVP was goaltender Ben Errington who absolutely robbed a number of Tiger players throughout the game.

Clearly the players, coaches, parents and siblings were disappointed that success on the ice was not in the cards. Good lessons were learned however including: how competitive the team is when all players commit 100% effort to the game; how important special teams become at this level of play; how important strong positional play, with and without the puck, is to success; how well the players get along as a team; and, how bad the parents are at finding restaurants.

    12. Protests must be filed by the team officials in the Tournament Office within thirty minutes after the end of the game and must be accompanied by a cheque for $250.00. The decision of the Tournament Committee will be final. Protest fee to be returned if the protest is upheld.
    13. Advancing to Quarter Finals: The first place teams in each division advance, plus the next best three teams in Minor Atom and Peewee and the next best two teams in Atom and Minor Peewee, based on points. The teams are then seeded 1 through 8 based on their GF avg. The teams will then play as follows: 1 vs. 8; 2 vs. 7; 3 vs. 6; and 4 vs. 5.

Note: GF average is calculated as follows: add the goals for and the goals against together and divide the total into the goals for, with the Team having the highest percentage being awarded the highest position. Example: If a team scores 54 goals for and has 9 against, their GF average would be calculated as follows:

    54 plus 9 = 63
    54 divided by 63 = GF avg 0.8571
    14. Advancing to Semi-Finals: Winners of each semi-final move on and are seeded 1 through 4 based on the GF avg earned in their semi-final game. Teams will play as follows: 1 vs. 4 and 3 vs. 2
    15. Advancing to the Championship: Winners of each quarter final move into Championship. Team with best GF avg becomes the home team.
    16. Tie Breakers:

  • Recap

The Lakers opened the tournament Friday afternoon playing the then unknown Flint Icelanders ’95 Selects. While the game was within reach for the team, 7 Lakers penalties kept flow out of the game. Flint capitalized, scoring 3 power play goals. The lone Lakers goal also came off the power play when Travis Bender knocked home a rebound off a goal mouth scramble. The team’s 2nd game of the day was against the Toronto Jr. Canadiens, who handed the Lakers a 7-0 defeat. While the score was lop-sided, the team did maintain focus and did not allow themselves to be intimidated by the bigger and faster Canadiens.

Saturday saw the dawning of a new day with all parents and players fresh after a nice hockey tournament hotel night that resulted in no formal eviction notices. Playing their most inspired stretch of hockey so far this year, the team started the day off playing the West Seneca Wings. They kept the Wings hemmed up in their zone for much of the early part of the 1st period, generated a number of quality scoring chances, and even drew a penalty shot. Special teams however played havoc with the Lakers as they gave up 3 power-play goals and surrendered two more while on power-plays of their own. The final score ended up 7-1.

The team’s last game of the Tournament was against the St. Catherines Falcons. The team took an early lead when PJ Conlon intercepted a Falcons’ clearing attempt, went in alone and ended the play with a nice deek. The Falcons tied the game up before the end of the period while on their only power play of the game. The Falcons then scored 3 more goals to take a 4-1 lead into the last 8 minutes of the game. Not wanting the tournament to end this way, the Lakers dug deep, scoring 2 goals in the last 4 minutes of the game, almost evening the score in the last minute while on the power play.  Goal scorers were Cole Ciccone and McCracken, with Connor JohnsonJayden Landry and Ciccone picking up assists.

Although the team returned from the Tournament sporting an 0-4 record they did, however, at times play some of their most complete hockey of the season to date.
