Goal or No Goal?
The Major Bantam Lakers hosted the Brantford 99ers on Sunday afternoon in St. Marys. The 99ers had won their first match-up 6-2 several weeks ago and the Lakers were determined to show they were a better team than that.
The 99ers took a 1-0 lead about a third of the way into the period on a power play goal. The Lakers evened the score near the end of the period when
Iain Donnelly
stole the puck, deked the goalie, and scored on a nice backhand shot (see video below).
The Lakers finished the period with a short 5 on 3 power play that would carry over to the second period.
The Lakers pulled ahead early in the second period by scoring before the power play ran out. The goal came as a result of some excellent puck movement that saw
Brett Stacey
pass across to
Jacob Middleton
(an AP player from the Minor Bantams) who then went cross ice to
PJ Conlon
. Conlon snapped the puck into the top corner before the 99ers' goalie could get fully across and set (see video below).
The Lakers stretched the lead to 3-1 a few minutes later when, after a power play that saw them pepper the 99ers goalie with shots, Stacey would fire a shot on net that would see the rebound come back to
Jayden Landry.
Landry made no mistake in shooting the puck under the diving netminder and into the net (see video below).
The Lakers 3-1 lead would remain throughout the remainder of the second period.
The third period saw the Lakers start short-handed but they were able to kill off the penalty. Play was relatively equal throughout the period and time was on the Lakers side as the clock ran down. With under two minutes to go the 99ers would get their second goal to make it a close contest for the remaining 1:39. Brantford pulled their goalie for the extra attacker at 1:12 and the pressure was really on the Lakers. The Lakers took a penalty with about a dozen seconds to go to face a 6 on 4. Then, with no time left on the clock, the 99ers would score a controversial game-tying goal that would see the game end in a 3-3 tie.
The Lakers had put in a much better game and a more spirited effort than their previous contest with the 99ers.
Next up for the Lakers is a tilt with the Waterloo Wolves on Tuesday evening in Palmerston at 7:30 pm.
