Major PeeWees win Home Opener
On Sunday in Listowel, the PeeWees earned their first win of the regular season with a 5-1 victory over Brantford.
In a penalty-filled contest, the '99 Laker PeeWees defeated division rival Brantford with solid defensive play and exceptional special teams work.
The Lakers opened the scoring on the Power Play on a blast from Ben Derrough (assists to Jacob Rooke and Brett Denny). Two more power play goals were scored in the second. Denny's booming slapshot made it 2-0 (assists to Derrough and Will Thibeault). Thibeault made it 3-0 when he put home a rebound off a Denny point shot. Derrough picked up the 2nd assist.
The third period saw a parade to the penalty box. Brantford took the momentum away and outplayed the Lakers for most of the third period. Goalie Brock Baier was outstanding, making a number of saves to keep the game 3-1. Late in the third, the Lakers scored one more powerplay goal (Rooke from Rhys Volmer and Blair Butchart). Butchart added a last minute goal on a nice individual effort. Noah Kuno picked up a lone assist.
Overall, the Laker special teams were the difference. Brantford was 0 for 8 on the powerplay while the Lakers went 4 for 7 on power play attempts. Final score was 5-1.
The Lakers are on the road this weekend as they participate in the Compuware/Honeybaked tourney in Detroit.
