Lakers lose home opener 3-2 to Cambridge
The boys were excited for their season home opener against Cambridge in St Mary's last night. The Lakers opened the scoring in the first at 12:51 on a nice goal by Quinton Haddock, assisted by Zach Goodhew on their 3rd shot of the game.
Shots in first were dead even at 12 a piece, with good scoring chances for both sides. Cambridge came out strong in the second and took a 2-1 lead. Penalty problems hurt the Lakers in the second period as they spent 8 minutes in the box compared to Cambridge's 0. Total penalties after 2 periods were 16 to 6 for the Lakers, which made it hard to gather momentum. Shots in second were 14-10 for Cambridge.
The third period started out fast with both teams exchanging scoring chances. Cambridge finally put one in at the 10:15 mark, which put them up 3-1. The boys never quit and got within 1 goal at the 9:33 mark on a nice shot by Mckenzie Carter, as he wired a hard shot top shelf. The game went back and fourth and Lakers pulled their goalie with a man advantage with about 1 minute left, which gave them a 6 on 3. The team tried to even the score at 3 but their goalie made some key saves. Shots in the 3rd were 13-9 for Cambridge for a total of 39 to 31 favoring Cambridge. Penalties in the third were 14 to 12 for the Lakers, for a game total of 30-18 for the team.
Great goaltending by Trevor Bloch gave the Lakers the chance to tie it up in the third. He played a solid game making several key saves.The boys don't have much time to dwell on the loss as they play their second home game in Stratford Sunday at 2:30 against Waterloo.
