Laker Minor Bantams Finish Season Strong
The Huron Perth Lakers 'AAA' Minor Bantams went into this past weekend
looking to finish off the regular season on a winning note and to
extend their current unbeaten streak to 4 games. Playing host to the
Cambridge Hawks at the new Stratford Rotary Complex, the Lakers came
away with a convincing 7-3 victory, giving the Hawks a preview of what
to expect in the 1st Rd of Alliance Playdowns as the 2 teams will now
meet in the Best of 5 Quarter Final.
After a scoreless opening period, Calvin Penney continued his amazing
touch around the net as he opened the scoring for the Lakers in the 2nd
with assists going to Derek Cowing & Jackson Martin. Garrett Meurs
was then allowed to go uncontested to the slot allowing him to redirect
a Jordan Currie point shot for the Lakers 2nd of the game. Nathan Gaunt
quickly followed suit banging home a rebound created off a Nik McIver
point shot to put the Lakers up 3-0.
Minutes later, Gaunt found
the net again for his 2nd of the game with Meurs & David Dalby
notching helpers.In the final period of play, Meurs collected his 2nd
& 3rd goals of the game to finish with the hattrick as Gaunt,
McIver, Penney & Cowing collected assists respectively. Gaunt also
finished with the hattrick late in the game after connecting with Dalby
to close out the scoring. The Lakers finish the regular season in 2nd
Place in the Eastern Division with a Regular Season record of 21-10-1
with 126 goals for & 73 against & an Overall record of 40-17-6
with 257 goals for & 159 against.
