Defensive Letdowns Costly in Sarnia
The minor midget Lakers travelled to Sarnia to face off against the Lambton Jr Sting Sunday afternoon and looked poised to capture their second win of the season mid-way though the second period.
The Lakers opened the scoring in the first on a shorthanded tally by Chett Binning, who out-worked three Lambton players behind their goal to score on the wrap-around. Reid Goobie was credited with an assist on the goal. The Lakers executed a new forechecking system virtually flawlessly in the first period and controlled the play for a majority of the stanza.
The Sting managed to capitalize on a fortunate bounce to start off the second period to tie the game, but the Lakers responded with two of their own. Graham Ashcroft, playing his first game as an affiliate for the Lakers, scored a nifty goal while laying on his belly after being hauled down on a breakaway. Assists went to Tyler Kuntz and Tyson Avery. A little over a minute later, Ashcroft returned the favour with Kuntz to bring the game to 3-1. The Lakers seemed to relax at that point and Lambton responded with three quick markers to take the lead before Huron-Perth knew what hit them.
The third period was all Lambton, who were able to able to score twice more en route to the 6-3 victory. Braden VanNynatten took the loss for the Lakers, stopping 16 of 22 shots. The Lakers were 0-5 on the Power Play while Lambton was 2-3. Huron-Perth was unable to capitalize on a lengthy 5-on-3 situation late in the second period.
The team has two practices this week to prepare for a 3-game road trip next weekend to the Windsor area, facing Windsor Friday night, Sun County Saturday night, and facing off with Chatham-Kent on the way home Sunday.
