Major Atoms go 1-1 on the weekend
Written by Jeff Aarts

Friday night the Major Atoms traveled to Brantford to take on the 99ers.  Brantford would score the first two goals in this game on power plays until Zac McCann would bring the Lakers back within one with an early 2nd period goal from Kayden Schooley and Blake Wideman.

The 99ers would quickly regain the 2 goal lead a minute later and would stretch the lead to 4-1 late in the 2nd. Zachary Teale would knotch his first of two at 4:46 to cut the lead in half on a feed from McCann.  Brantford would once again spoil any comeback however with two 3rd period powerplay goals. Teale (from Sheldon Pryce) would notch his 2nd with 5 minutes to go in the game trying to spur another late Lakers rally,  but it would not happen on this day.  Final score Brantford 6, Huron-Perth 3.

On Sunday the Major Atoms would play host to the Cambridge Hawks in their fourth meeting of the season.  The Lakers looked to rebound from the loss on Friday night and keep their unbeaten record against Cambridge alive.  The Lakers would find themselves down quickly in the first on the Hawks man advantage.  Strong penalty killing later in the period as they fought off a 5 on 3 would allow the Lakers to head into the second only down by a goal.  In the second Huron Perth would get things going as Blake Wideman with a pass from Zac McCann would spring on a breakaway, and with one hand, chip the puck over the Cambridge goalie to even things up.  Late in the 2nd, Blake Wideman would pick a long pass from Connor Aarts out of the air and break free of the Cambride D once again to go in alone and fire one over the shoulder of the Hawks goalie.  One minute later, Kaden Hoggarth would skate in alone on a feed from Braedan McNaughton and slide it thru the goalies legs to expand the lead to 3-1 going into the 3rd.  5 minutes into the third a nice passing play by the Lakers would be foiled by the Cambridge netminder, however Zachary Teale would go hard to the net and pounce on a rebound to expand the lead to 4-1.  Assists by Zac McCann and Tyler Hotson.

The Hawks would not go away however as they would score twice to pull within one with 5 and a half minutes to go.  Strong play by Hardy Westman in net and good back checking by the forwards would help to foil the Hawks comeback and preserve the Lakers win.  Final Score 4-3.  The Major Atoms look to next weekend as they host Sun County Saturday and Brantford on Sunday.
